Sydney: Angie stopped by Kvitova

Defending champion and no.2 seed Angelique failed to reach the Sydney International last four as she suffered a 4-6, 1-6 loss to fifth seed Petra Kvitova in their quarter-final clash on Thursday.

The late-night match, that was interrupted on several occasions due to rain, actively lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

Angie broke first in the fifth game of the opening set. However, Kvitova won four successive games and with a double break sealed the first set 6-4.

Another two breaks of serve in the second set brought seventh win to Kvitova in the 13th career encounter between the pair.

Stats: aces (0-4), double faults (2-1), 1st serve points won % (56-70), total points won (48-63).

Angelique will now head to Melbourne for the Australian Open, where she was crowned champion in 2016. She will face world no.92 Polona Hercog of Slovenia in R1.

The year’s first Grand Slam tournament starts on January 14.
